As the world becomes more concerned about climate change, countries all over the world turn to renewable resources to power themselves. While there is still much to do to wean ourselves off fossil fuels entirely, Portugal accomplished something really impressive that is definitely a step in the right direction: the entire country ran on renewable energy for 4 days in a row.
Renewable energy sources have one brilliant advantage over fossil fuels: they will never run out. While the initial investment for such power plants is indeed higher than those that run on coal or oil, the long term advantages are endless. That’s why Portugal has invested so much in clean energy and that’s exactly how it managed to run itself for an admirable 107 hours just on renewable energy. Portugal accomplished this feat this very month starting from 7th of May and continuing till the 11th.
Portugal’s ZERO System Sustainable Land Association along with the Portuguese Renewable Energy Association (APREN) released the numbers that confirmed that Portugal had indeed not used coal power plants to fulfill its energy needs. The ZERO website reads:
Battling climate change begins with the transition to clean energy that reduces the harmful greenhouse gases that are responsible for global warning. Power plants that run on renewable energy are the only way to do that.
It’s great and reassuring to see that more and more countries are turning to renewable energy. Just a few days ago, Germany produced 95 percent of its energy from clean energy sources. Now, with Portugal hopping on the bandwagon, we could benefit tremendously if more countries started following this trend.
