Human perception is quite a subjective issue, is it not? It can at times mislead people and fool them into thinking things that they normally do not perceive in a certain way. A good example of this that you may try for yourself back home is part of the new BBC Four series called Colour: The Spectrum of Science. A video detailing the exact guidelines helps you view a black and white picture that changes to a full colour picture.
What makes this image change colours like that, you ask? Well, it basically has everything to do with the cone cells. These are one of the two sorts of photoreceptors in the retina of the human eye. You guessed it correctly, it accounts for color vision. There are a total of three sorts of cones that are sensitive to three different wavelengths; one of red, another of blue and one of green. In the instance of an eye being exposed to a particular colour, that specific sort of cone becomes overstimulated as well as unresponsive.
This forces people to use the other two types of cones that display the complementary colours such as green against red or yellow against blue. Once some time passes, the cones are recharged before the viewer can perceive the particular colour once more.
